I have not had much to say, either on ePrays or in real life (whatever that is), about the Schiavo case since many others seem to give much better arguments than I can muster. I usually don't link a Mark Steyn article, since (again) many others tend to do that.
This recent one, where he ties together abortion and Euro-think with Terri Schiavo's plight, is a real goodie (hat tip to
Mere Comments - if you're not checking it every day you're missing out).
In practice, a culture that thinks Terri Schiavo's life in Florida or the cleft-lipped baby's in Herefordshire has no value winds up ascribing no value to life in general. Hence, the shrivelled fertility rates in Europe and in blue-state America: John Kerry won the 16 states with the lowest birth rates; George W Bush took 25 of the 26 states with the highest.
Jesus did
not come to this world saying "I have come that they may have choice and have it abundantly". He did say "... that they may have life ..."(John 10:10). God does give us a choice, and we need to choose life. God chose that for us, and we honor Him by doing the same.
One other thing: if Terri Schiavo goes, then watch out quadriplegics and infants, since they can't feed themselves either. What a sorry mess this is.
Lord, precious giver of life, I lift up those who are battling the legal fight to allow Ms. Schiavo to live. Bless them Lord with strength, and give them the wisdom to make the best legal argument so that we may uphold life. Amen.
[NOTE: I don't know much about the baby in Herefordshire, but the thought of a baby being killed over a cleft-lip palate is sickening. We recently attended a fund-raiser for
Operation Smile, a group that organizes teams of doctors to visit countries where people (children and adults) need surgery for cleft-lip but cannot afford it. The founder, Dr. William P. Magee, came to speak and he gave an inspiring message. Praise God for this group!]
